Job Summary:
The ISS Monitor & Building Aide is a dual-role position that supports the academic and behavioral success of students. This staff member supervises students assigned to in-school suspension (ISS) and serves as a substitute teacher across content areas when needed.
Responsibilties:
In-School Suspension Monitoring & Oversight:
- Supervise students assigned to ISS, ensuring a structured, quiet, and respectful learning environment.
- Support students in completing classwork provided by their teachers.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, assignments, and behavioral incidents during ISS.
- Promote reflection and restorative practices to help students re-enter the regular classroom environment.
- Communicate with administrators, counselors, and teachers regarding student progress and needs.
Building Substitute Coverage:
- Provide classroom instruction in the absence of the regular teacher or paraprofessional using lesson plans and materials provided.
- Maintain a safe and respectful classroom environment.
- Manage student behavior using school-wide expectations and routines.
- Leave accurate documentation of student progress and any notable incidents for the regular teacher.
- Serving as a resource to visiting substitutes - showing to their room, unlocking doors, etc.
- Administering standardized assessments as needed.
- Providing a separate setting as needed.
Other Responsibilities:
- Participate in staff meetings and building professional development.
- Support implementation of building-wide initiatives (e.g., PBIS, MTSS, etc).
- Assist with building supervision as needed.
- Support arrival and dismissal routines as directed.
- Help maintain a safe and orderly school environment.
- Other duties as assigned by the building administration
Qualifications:
- Completion of at least 60 hours of college coursework
- Hold or be eligible for a Kansas Emergency Substitute License as required by the Kansas Department of Education
- Prior experience working with students preferred
- Strong interpersonal and classroom management skills
- Ability to adapt to various classroom settings and student needs
- Understanding of behavior management and de-escalation techniques
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to move throughout the school building, including walking, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., carrying supplies, assisting with classroom setup).
- Must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations, including the ability to walk briskly or ascend/descend stairs.
- Visual and auditory acuity necessary to monitor student behavior and communicate effectively.
- Capable of remaining calm and physically present in high-energy or potentially stressful environments.
- May be required to sit or stand for long periods depending on the assignment.
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
This is an hourly position. 7.5 hours per day. Paid employee-only health insurance. $40/month 403(b) contribution match. KPERS-covered position
